Business calls and sales calls, what’s the difference?

Each and every business is looking for some kind of success, albeit success means different things to each of us. Whatever it looks like for you, part of that success is likely to involve winning new business and customers. And this will involve sales in some form or another.
Reaching out to contacts, colleagues, prospects, targets, lists of data, ideally we want to be having business conversations, and we don’t want them to feel like sales calls. Why? Well, we want to develop trust and rapport, so it needs to feel as natural, and professional as possible. Clearly at Cre8 we make a lot of calls, these are some of the ways we ensure we have great conversations with decision makers and ultimately get good results and leads.
- Data – if you plan and prepare correctly, you should be able to, largely, speak with the right kind of people, which gives you a far better chance of having a proper conversation. Calls to relevant people, means you have something to talk about that will resonate with your targets. This increases your opportunities.
- Be direct – be honest about why you’re calling. There is no need to be apologetic about having a great service to offer to the right kind of people. If you’re open and honest, this is the first step to developing trust. People do appreciate directness.
- Ask if it’s convenient – basic courtesy and respecting someone else’s time helps to develop rapport and also ensures you’ve got their attention. If they’re too busy now, they won’t be engaged, and you can rearrange for a better time.
- Ask about their challenges – there is no point pitching your services, until you know what their needs are. Find out about them, see where you can help them, before you launch into what you can offer. It’s really at this point that you start to develop a good business conversation.
